Important News on E111The Department of Health took out large advertisements in national newspapers on 15 October 2004 about the change to the EU's reciprocal health agreement forms - the E111. The news is that old forms (those issued before 19 August 2004) will no longer be valid after 31 December 2004. Therefore everyone should apply for a new E111 before they go to Alpe d'Huez. The new E111 application form (CM1) and the form itself can be downloaded from the Department of Heath web site page Applying for an E111 form. You can only validate a new E111 form by going to a Post Office where you will also find the "Health Advice for Travellers" leaflet which contains the CM1 and E111 forms. In theory your Travel Insurance may be invalid without a valid E111, though that may not hold up in a Court of Law, since Mark Warner do not mention the new E111 in their "Before you go" tips. Travel ArrangementsYou should shortly be receiving your flight tickets, either by hand or posted by Special Delivery. Mark Warner usually offer discounted airport parking through BCP, though I haven't received any leaflets with that info. Watch this space for a promotional code which may give a discount, as long as you pre-book. Members of the RBSG Ski Club (South) should send their booking forms directly to Stuart Mazdon, but Huggins Tours associates should return theirs to Paul. A booking form is included in the Adobe Acrobat file, but a Microsoft Word version can be viewed here (if you have Word). The ResortAlpe d’Huez is the capital of Les Grandes-Rousses, the fifth largest ski area in France. It's not a purpose-built resort, however the additions to the original village means it has all the convenience of one.
Alpe d’Huez can justifiably be described as a genuine all-round ski resort, with plenty of action both on and off-piste. 230 kilometres of piste, (including 16 kilometre run), 10,000 hectares of skiing, 86 lifts, 2,200 metres vertical drop, 700 snowcannons covering nearly 40km of piste and a snowpark set amongst Alpine fir trees, means there’s something for everyone. If you don’t feel you’ve had enough skiing during the day, head to the Signal Slalom stadium for night-time action and get the most out of your Visalp pass! The pistes are designed for skiers of all abilities. The ratings (out of 5 stars) in the Good Ski and Snowboard Guide 2004 speak for themselves:
Alpe d’Huez is probably the sunniest resort in the Alps, due to the large number of south-facing pistes. This can be a problem late in the season, but January is the ideal time to visit the resort while the temperature is still low enough to keep the snow in good condition. The slopes also have a huge array of snow cannons which mitigate against the risks of low snowfall or too much sun. The resort itself is large and good for those who enjoy a bit of après-ski. Whilst not particularly architecturally appealing, the town is more pleasant than many French purpose-built resorts.
Most of the runs in the bowl just above Alpe d'Huez are green runs. The 16 km run is the black Sarenne piste which has a total drop of 2000m - steep at the top, shallow at the bottom - "a demanding and highly satisfying run (with stunning views)" Ski Facts and Costs
The HotelThe Chalethotel Le Mariandre is situated in the heart of the old quarter of Alpe d’Huez. This cosy family hotel is just 25 metres from the Telecentre ski lift, which connects into the main skiing area and the many easy beginner pistes, and just 25 metres from the ski bus stop. Snow conditions permitting you can ski back almost to the door for most of the season. Within short walking distance are both an indoor and open air swimming pool, ice rink, sports centre offering tennis, squash, aerobics, gym and the numerous shops, bars and restaurants.
Le Mariandre is built in an attractive chalet style and the use of pine-panelling in many areas gives a snug and homely ambience. On entering the hotel, the carved pine staircase takes you up to the first floor with bright, south-facing lounge and private bar with balcony and spectacular views of the nearby mountain ranges. The crèche is on the second floor. Move downstairs to the the ground floor with a small public bar and private restaurant which offers tables of mixed sizes for dining.
The bedrooms are a variety of shapes and sizes spread over the first, second and third floors. Some are quite compact, but all are furnished to a comfortable standard. All have ensuite bathrooms and wc, telephone and TV and some have balconies. Some rooms can take an extra bed and/or cot and there are 3 family suites which are ideal for families with two or more children.
